37 witnesses at SABC inquiry

The commission of inquiry investigating the SABC's use of independent political analysts has finished hearing evidence after a final round of submissions this week. According to a statement issued by Zwelakhe Sisulu and Advocate Gilbert Marcus SC on Thursday, 7 September 2006, a total of 37 witnesses appeared before the commission, of whom 32 were from the SABC.

Written submissions were also considered.

"Although the majority of submissions were made voluntarily, we also called on a number of people to present evidence to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation," said Sisulu and Marcus in the statement.

"We would thank all those who have been part of the process as they have made a valuable contribution to public discourse around the use of independent political analysts, as well as helping to define understanding of the role of the public broadcaster."

The two are now finalising the drafting process and, due to their work schedules, have had to revise their timeframes and will now endeavour to present their final report to the group CEO of the SABC, Advocate Dali Mpofu, before mid-October.

No further comment will be made at this point.
