NEW YORK: Two Central African Republic journalists were fined and released from custody Monday, 11 July 2011, after being jailed for weeks in connection with their coverage of public protests by retired military officers who say the government failed to direct European Union funds to them as intended, according to news reports and local journalists.

BANGUI: Reporters Without Borders has strongly condemned the three-year jail sentence that a Bangui prosecutor, Arnauld Djoubaye, requested on Thursday, 7 July 2011, for Les Collines de l'Oubangui editor Faustin Bambou and Média Plus editor Emmanuel Cyrus Sandy on charges of inciting violence and hatred in a case involving President François Bozizé's son, defence minister Jean-Francis Bozizé.

KINSHASA: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has expressed concern about Tumba Lumembu, a journalist who has been detained in Kinshasa for the past six weeks, and has urged the authorities to free him. A reporter for the newspaper La Tempête des Tropiques, he was abducted on a street in the capital on 15 September 2010 by members of the National Intelligence Agency (ANR).

The 2010 MISA-Malawi Media Awards were held earlier this week as part of the World Press Freedom Day celebrations at the Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre. Journalist Maxwell Ng'ambi won the overall media award as well as the 2010 Best Investigative Journalist Award for the fourth consecutive year. Ng'ambi, however, has left the industry to join the corporate world as an employee of Standard Bank Malawi.

Malawi mobile phone service provider TNM Limited has bemoaned increased depreciation charges, which it has attributed to losses posted in the 2008 - 2009 financial year. Malawian journalists have started celebrating World Press Freedom Day, which falls on 3 May every year. Organisers of the event, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi), said a tight budget has forced them to organise the celebration in three parts. The first event took place on 24 April 2010 in Mzuzu and will be followed by a Lilongwe-based event on 1 May 2010.
