The future of retail field teams

Every store visit comes with a mountain of responsibility. The stock room is a mess. Stock for a promotion is dwindling. A competitor launches a new product and is dominating the category. Historically, for a field sales representative, these issues were captured and escalated to head office. Today, these are the moments that should help a business respond in real-time, protect relationships and create opportunities.
The future of retail field teams

ConnectGroup believes field teams should spend more of their day where they make the greatest difference: with customers. Its Max for Brands platform brings together what the rep sees in-store, what the retailer's data reveals, and what the brand's sales and trade investment data shows.

Less time documenting. More time doing

Max for Brands brings merchandisers, sales representatives and head-office managers together on a single platform, with tailored user journeys that reflect their different roles and responsibilities. By simplifying how information is captured, shared and accessed across the business, the platform reduces the end-of-day scramble to compile field reports and ensures the right information reaches the right people, when they need it.

For managers, that means a clearer view of what is happening across stores, customers and regions. Instead of waiting for a report to land, they can use a built-in assistant to ask questions about sales information in plain language. How is a region performing? Where might a promotion be falling short? Which accounts need attention? The platform is designed to help bring those answers closer to the moment they matter.

Because insight is only useful if it arrives in time

In fast-moving retail and distribution environments, timing matters. A competitor’s promotion, a change in product availability or a customer concern can quickly become yesterday’s news if it sits in a report for too long. Making field intelligence easier to capture and access can help teams spot issues earlier and respond while there is still an opportunity to make a difference.

But timely reporting is only part of the equation. Field teams also need access to the information that explains what is happening in-store and helps them determine what to do next.

From store-level visibility to better commercial decisions

Beyond its core field sales capabilities, Max for Brands can be extended with additional data integrations and modules tailored to a client's requirements, bringing retailer operations, trade spend, stock information and commercial performance closer to the people working in the field.

Through its partnership with Secuvest, ConnectGroup offers Max for Insights, an additional capability that integrates retailer stock and operational data to provide a more detailed view of store performance at SKU level.

This includes visibility into products with no sales for 21 days, wastage, low stock, overstocking, and whether products are ranged or deranged. For merchandisers and reps, this information can help identify issues that may otherwise go unnoticed until the next report or customer review.

A product with no sales for 21 days may warrant investigation. Low stock can highlight a replenishment opportunity, while overstocking or wastage may signal a need to review ordering or demand. Ranging information helps representatives understand whether a product is expected to be stocked in a particular store.

Instead of relying only on what they observe during a visit, representatives can use relevant retailer data to have more informed conversations with customers, identify potential problems and agree on practical actions.

A further capability is the integration of trade spend information and sales-out data, subject to the client's subscriptions and the data integrations. This can give representatives access to relevant sales and investment information at store level, including which products are performing, comparisons between current-year and previous-year sales, and in-store activation spend in relation to sales outcomes.

This connection matters because investment and execution should not be viewed in isolation. When representatives can see historical sales performance alongside information about promotional spend, they are better equipped to evaluate what is working, identify questions that need further investigation and have evidence-based discussions with customers about future activity.

For example, a representative reviewing an in-store activation can use available sales and trade spend information to support a conversation about performance and the value of future investment. Rather than relying solely on historical trade spend.

The objective is to eliminate flying blind. By connecting field execution with retailer operations, stock data, trade spend and sales performance through the capabilities relevant to each client, ConnectGroup aims to put more actionable intelligence directly into the hands of the people making decisions in-store. “Historically, access to retailer sales-out data has been limited, making it difficult for brands and their frontline teams to get a complete picture of what is happening at store level. We believe that making this data more accessible is critical to the shared success of retailers, brands and agencies. By putting meaningful sales insights into the hands of frontline teams, businesses can make better-informed decisions, strengthen customer partnerships and work together to drive growth,” Says Jane Eriksen, co-founder of ConnectGroup.

Keeping the human connection at the centre

AI can organise information and help identify trends, but it cannot replace the trust built between a representative and a customer, or the judgement that comes from knowing a store and its people. Field sales remains a human business. The role of technology is to take unnecessary friction out of the day and put relevant information within reach, so those relationships have more room to grow.

“Field teams are close to customers and the realities of the market every day. We believe the information they gather should be easier to capture, easier to understand and more useful to the decisions businesses make. By connecting field execution with relevant retailer, stock and sales performance data, we can help representatives move beyond reporting what happened to making better-informed commercial decisions,” Warren Canning, co-founder of ConnectGroup.

The future of field sales is not just about doing the same work faster. It is about giving representatives the time, information and intelligence to have better conversations, make stronger decisions and create more value from every store visit.
