The Next Wave
The radio station is launching The Next Wave on Metro FM, a nationwide campaign to discover and elevate fresh radio talent and give one aspiring broadcaster the chance to co-host the station’s flagship Summer Show alongside an established on-air personality.
The initiative forms part of Metro FM’s festive season plans, with the station looking to deepen its connection with younger audiences, increase listenership and Time Spent Listening, and bring new voices into its programming.
“The Next Wave is more than a competition. It’s a platform for discovery, growth, and a chance to take your place behind the microphone on one of the country’s leading radio stations,” said Siyanda Fikelephi, Metro FM acting business manager.
“We’re looking for authenticity, confidence, creativity, and that special spark that connects with audiences.”
Fikelephi told Bizcommunity that the station is looking for more than someone who simply wants to be on radio — it is looking for a voice with something to say.
"The Next Wave is an opportunity for aspiring broadcasters to show us who they are, what makes them different and how they can bring their own perspective to the Metro FM audience."
Fikelephi said competitions like The Next Wave also give traditional media an opportunity to evolve alongside changing audience habits.
40 years of success
"Radio has remained relevant because it is ultimately about connection," he said.
"Technology has changed how audiences consume content, but the need for trusted voices, shared experiences, entertainment and conversations that reflect people's everyday lives remains. At Metro FM, we have continued to evolve with our audiences, using radio as a powerful platform for music, culture, current affairs and meaningful conversations, while embracing digital platforms that allow us to extend those experiences beyond the traditional broadcast. Our 40-year journey is a testament to our ability to evolve while remaining connected to what matters to our audience."
Looking ahead, Fikelephi said Metro FM's next chapter will be about adapting to changing consumption habits without losing the identity that has defined the station over four decades.
"The next 40 years will be about evolution without losing our identity. Audiences are consuming content across multiple platforms and in increasingly personalised ways, so Metro FM must continue to meet them where they are—on air and across digital platforms—while remaining a trusted home for contemporary music, culture, entertainment and conversation.
"Initiatives such as The Next Wave are also important because the future of Metro FM depends on continuously discovering new voices, ideas and perspectives. We want to create a platform where the next generation can see themselves reflected, participate in the conversation and ultimately help shape the future of the station."
