From Africa to the world: Bushtec’s manufacturing success story

From modest beginnings in a small South African town, Bushtec, part of the Canvas and Tent Group, has grown into a global leader in innovative tented and redeployable infrastructure solutions. Headquartered in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, the company’s manufacturing excellence, technical innovation and commitment to sustainability have enabled it to deliver high-performance structures for some of the world’s most demanding environments. From remote mining, medical and military infrastructure, to elegant luxury tented solutions that blend seamlessly with nature, Bushtec tents now go from Africa to the world.
From Africa to the world: Bushtec’s manufacturing success story

Humble origins and military-grade foundations

Bushtec’s story began in 1968 with the manufacture of tarpaulins for the South African Railways. The company, established as Canvas and Tent, quickly pivoted to heavy-duty tents during the 1970s, supplying military and humanitarian aid structures during the Angolan war. This early focus on durability in harsh conditions laid the foundation for its technical prowess. Key milestones illustrate Bushtec’s innovative spirit: the world’s first bow tent for the military in 1972, collaboration with the CSIR and SABS on military sleeping bags in 1981, and a 2000 technology transfer from Weatherhaven Canada for barrel-type PVC shelters.

Leveraging military-grade manufacturing capabilities, Canvas and Tent pioneered premium luxury hospitality tents in the 1980s, supplying the first Meru-style luxury tents for Kruger National Park in 1988.

By 2002, Canvas and Tent had launched and acquired multiple specialised brands, including Bushtec Originals for mining, military and disaster relief, and Bushtec Safari for luxury tourism. The Meerkat brand caters for the adventure camping market, while Kalahari Kanvas expanded Bushtec Safari into Botswana. Subsequent expansions into Europe, the USA, Namibia, and the Gulf region culminated in the 2026 global rebrand, which unified the entire group under the single Bushtec master brand for streamlined worldwide brand recognition.

The company now offers a comprehensive portfolio: bespoke luxury tents for Hospitality resorts under Bushtec Luxury Tented Creations and rapidly deployable camps for military, mining and disaster relief under Bushtec Redeployable Camp Solutions.

Bushtec structures are engineered for extreme conditions, ensuring that they are wind-resistant, rust-resistant, water-resistant, UV-stabilised, fire-retardant, and rot-proof, while incorporating advanced climate control and modular designs for easy transport and deployment.

Design team

Bushtec offers a design studio of specialist designers, archineers and engineers experienced in creating masterpieces with canvas. The talented team also creates luxurious interiors, and provides full concept to camp solutions for hospitality clients.

In hospitality tent design, these designers are referred to as archineers - professionals who blend architectural creativity with structural engineering. “Our archineers and designers continue to push boundaries, creating structures that combine world-class durability with sophisticated design tailored to each unique environment,” says Louis Viljoen, group chief of design, Canvas and Tent.

The Bushtec design team further creates durable, fit for purpose designs for the military, mining and disaster relief sectors, providing integrated hard wall, soft wall and modular prefabricated solutions. This includes full camp design, water reticulation, power supply and services as part of turnkey camp solutions.

Sustainability and community commitment

With over 1,000 projects delivered across more than 80 countries, Bushtec continues to expand its reach, with all solutions still manufactured at its large manufacturing base in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Ladysmith facility maintains ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification, reflecting rigorous quality and environmental standards. “Bushtec’s manufacturing and product philosophy prioritises environmental responsibility. Structures are designed for minimal site disturbance, efficient resource use and longevity, reducing the overall footprint of projects,” says Hans Hillebrand, CEO of the Canvas and Tent Group, including Bushtec brands.

This facility employs hundreds of local staff, making it a significant employer and contributor to community stability in the region, says Hillebrand. “We’re proud to have some third-generation people working for us in this community. We believe in investing in our people and the surrounding communities, supporting workforce development, fair labour practices, diversity, and community initiatives. It strengthens resilience and shared prosperity. Everyone at Bushtec takes great pride in what we create.”

A global legacy built in South Africa

From railway tarpaulins and robust redeployable solutions to iconic luxury camps across the globe, Bushtec shows how South African innovation and manufacturing excellence can compete and lead on the world stage. With over 1,000 projects delivered across more than 80 countries, the company continues to expand, while remaining rooted in Ladysmith.

As global demand grows for sustainable, durable, and rapidly deployable infrastructure, Bushtec’s story demonstrates the power of heritage, innovation and community-focused growth, showing that world-class solutions can originate from Africa and reach the world.
