Marketing & MediaFrom billboard banner to school bag: Turning waste into opportunity

The initiative is built on a simple idea: every child deserves the opportunity to learn, explore and discover what they’re capable of, regardless of their circumstances. For every MavericKids Activity Book purchased, Gift of the Givers donates a book and a stationery pack to a child in need, helping to put both reading material and essential learning supplies within reach.
Access to these resources matters in a country where eight out of 10 Grade 4 pupils can’t read for meaning, while nearly three in five South African households don’t have a single fiction or nonfiction book.
When children have limited access to books, opportunities to practise reading, build their vocabulary and discover new interests can be harder to come by. MavericKids aims to help bridge that gap by making learning engaging and accessible.

Compiled annually from the children’s section of the award-winning DM168 newspaper, the 240-page MavericKids Activity Book is filled with activities, fascinating facts and problem-solving puzzles designed to turn learning into an adventure.
From science and nature to money, culture and the human body, the book encourages children to ask questions, follow their curiosity and explore ideas beyond their immediate surroundings.

The MavericKids Activity Book Volume 6 is available to pre-order through the Daily Maverick Shop for R325 per copy. Delivery is expected to begin in mid-November 2026.
By purchasing a copy, readers can give a child in their own lives an engaging resource to learn from while helping Gift of the Givers provide another child with a book and stationery pack.
Organisations interested in sponsoring bulk copies as part of their education and literacy corporate social responsibility initiatives can contact Ingrid Sinclair, Head of Growth at Daily Maverick, at az.oc.kcirevamyliad@dirgni.
