Applying to Unisa in 2027: What you need to know

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has been opening doors to students for generations. As Africa's largest open distance learning institution, it remains one of the most accessible and flexible study options available to South Africans, and applications for the 2027 academic year are now open. If studying at Unisa is on the cards, here's everything you need to know before you apply.
Applying to Unisa in 2027: What you need to know

Unisa application dates

The 2027 application window opened on 17 August 2026 and closes on 9 October 2026. This applies to undergraduate qualifications, honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas. There are no extensions, so treat the closing date as a hard deadline. Mark it in your calendar now and give yourself enough time to gather documents and complete the process without rushing.

Get your documents together

You’ll need to provide the following required documents before you can apply:

  • A certified copy of your ID or passport
  • A certified copy of your matric certificate or most recent academic results
  • Proof of payment of the application fee
  • For international applicants: a SAQA evaluation of foreign qualifications and a valid study visa

Note that each document needs to be in black and white, no larger than 2MB and saved in either PDF, Microsoft Word or TIF. Unisa will not process incomplete applications, so double-check everything before you submit.

Know your APS score

Before settling on a qualification, check that your Admission Point Score (APS) meets the requirements. Higher certificates generally require an APS of between 15 and 18, diplomas between 20 and 22, and bachelor's degrees 23 and above.

These are minimum thresholds. Specific programmes may have higher requirements, so always verify against the exact qualification you're applying for on the Unisa website before submitting.

Apply through the online portal

All applications are submitted through the Unisa admissions portal at www.unisa.ac.za. The process involves selecting your qualification, completing the application form, uploading your supporting documents and paying the R160 application fee. This fee is non-refundable and covers your full application regardless of how many qualifications you apply for. Payment is made after you receive your student number.

Make sure you have a stable internet connection before you start and save your progress as you go.

Start now, not later

The application window may feel long, but it closes before most people expect it to. Getting your documents together, confirming your APS score and understanding the requirements for your chosen qualification all take time. The students who have the smoothest application experience are usually the ones who started preparing weeks before the portal opened, not the ones who began the week before it closed.
