After completing school, I earned my first official job working on the Gouritz river, bungy bridge for a company called Face Adrenalin. Meeting a number of foreigners on the bridge motivated me to go overseas for two years. Once in the UK I completed my IRATA (Industrial Rope Access) course; Level 1. I spent the rest of my time in the UK running along the London skyline, very much like the chimney sweeps on the Mary Poppins film. During this period I learned a great deal about ropes, roofs and general building maintenance.
On my return to SA early 2005 I got a contract to work on SALT (South African Large Telescope in Sutherland) for six months, waterproofing the dome shaped roof of the Telescope building, as a rope access technician. This experience gave me the opportunity to learn about the technicalities of waterproofing especially precarious structures and working from close to impossible angles - rope access in general requires good problem solving skills. I used the money earned to buy a car and travelled through Africa for three months afterwards.
During my travels I decided to relocate from Pretoria to Cape Town where I completed my Level 2 RAFAA training and continued to work on various rope access contracts as a freelancer, including some maintenance work on Chapmans Peak. I also briefly extended my rigging knowledge into the entertainment industry working for Gearhouse as well as doing some stunt rigging on film sets.
These experiences motivated me to move further into the entertainment industry and reawakened my passion for creation with a more specific focus on art. I was accepted into the Michaelis School of Fine Art where I completed a four year degree as a sculpture major. During my time at Michaelis I got an opportunity to do some 'prop' work which included making fake ice for a Castle Lite beer advertisement.
In my own work as a sculptor I am most acquainted with wood as a medium although I did learn all of the essential elements of sculpting in my Fine Art Course - Casting/Mould Making, Carving, Assemblage est. Moreover, working as a rope access technician allowed me to learn about the properties of various metals as well as learning a lot about permanent and temporary weight bearing structures.
My most recent contract was with Afrika Burn - building the San Clan in the Tankwa Karoo.
