Best defined as Josh Groban having lunch with Madonna, singer-songwriter Rob Rodell has combined his classical training with a yen for popular music, to create a contemporary sound that combines a hint of old with a touch of new. As such, Rob "Reverb" Rodell, which is what some producers like to call him, is a South African Music Award (SAMA) nominated artist who fuses contemporary classical styles with dance, house, pop, rock and Afro-pop.
Rob wears two musical hats: the classical crossover music style, due to his classically trained voice (that's the Josh Groban part - the 'constant' in Rob's music), and then the dynamic, ever-changing follow-the-trend music style (that's the Madonna part - the 'variable' in Rob's music). If you like Josh, the chameleon-esque always-changing style of Madonna, Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Mika or Rick Astley, or the trendy youth-infused styles of commercial house music, you'll probably find something in Rob's music that you like too.
Under the auspices of Namwaaka (a singer-songwriter duo), Rob and partner Tzipora were nominated in the Top 20 in the country in the Metro FM Hansa Pilsener Songwriter's Competition in 2003. In 2006, Namwaaka was also nominated in and won the Top Billing Momentum Lifestyle Award in the musicians category, beating future SAMA winners Goldfish and Moreira. The awards were featured in various Top Billing shows and magazines throughout 2006 and 2007. Rob also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in February 2006, singing O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana with super-talented soprano Heidi Kruger.
Rob's debut CD under the auspices of Namwaaka was released in 2008, with three follow-up solo albums, one in 2009 and two in 2010. One of the tracks from the first original solo album was chosen for a compilation CD called The Art of Men, which was released in the United States and Australia in 2009. That year Rob also became the first person in the world to complete a licentiate in singing through Rockschool, the only accredited exam board for rock and pop music, which he passed with distinction.
Rob has shared the stage with Jamali, The Parlotones, Obita, Goldfish and others.
From a critical point of view, Rob's A Cappella Christmas album was nominated for a SAMA in 2011, as judges loved the album and felt it resonated a truly traditional Christmas spirit. Juxtaposed with that from a commercial and popular point of view, Rob's house track with DJs Cuebur and Shimza has been burning up the dance floors at parties, whilst also enjoying significant airplay on radio. The track has been included on two Soul Candi compilation releases, one of which is about to achieve gold status for sales in record stores.
