Resident Director of Ubom! Theatre Company, based in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. At Ubom! we create original devised theatre - grown from the soil of a diverse group of young and experienced performers.
Also member of A Conspiracy of Clowns - a theatre collective driven to pushing the boundaries of visual and alternative theatre making.
AKA "Ugli Bob", Rob is a founder member of the multi award-winning visual theatre company, from the hip: khulumakahle (FTH:K), and of its associated independent project A Conspiracy of Clowns. With these two companies, he has won a slew of theatre awards, most recently the Fleur du Cap for Innovation in Theatre.
Currently Resident Director of Ubom! East Cape Drama Company, Rob is a very active theatre maker, performer, and educator in South Africa.
In 2010, Rob was nominated for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative to work with the Mentor Peter Sellars. Candidates are nominated anonymously by leading professionals in their field, and it is a great honour to have been considered.
Rob holds an MA degree from Rhodes University, training under South African theatre maestro Andrew Buckland, and is also trained as a theatre technician and in theatre management and administration. His work over the last few years has seen the development of a personal style of original physical and non-verbal performance that is infused with the spirit of the clown, and utilises a strong visual design. A continual work-in-progress, Rob has worked at Rhodes University, CAP, AMAC, CityVarsity, AFDA Cape Town, UCT and NATA.
