Biography
Judith Van der Wat is currently in South Africa after having studied in the United States of America for 7 years. She attended the California Institute of the Arts, Oberlin College and Conservatory and Interlochen Arts Academy. As a native of South Africa, Ms Van der Wat was one of thirty students worldwide from age 12 to 25 who were selected to perform at The Eighth World Harp Congress in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ms. Van der Wat's competition credits include winner of the South African String Teachers' Competition, winner of the Yamaha Music Competition (piano) and a finalist in the SANLAM Youth Music Competition (piano). She was also the winner of a full merit scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Camp, a significant scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy and a full scholarship to the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.
Ms. Van der Wat considers solo performance to be an important part of her career and has appeared as both a harp and piano soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. As an active orchestral harpist, Ms. Van der Wat was and is assistant principal harpist of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed with numerous orchestras such as the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Simfonia Juventi (a national youth orchestra in South Africa), The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra and The Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Van der wat received her High School Diploma from Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied with Joan Raeburn Holland. She was a Harp Performance major at Oberlin College for two years and a Music History major for two years. She attended California Institute of Arts for her masters in Fine Arts, majoring in Harp Performance with Professor Susan Allen, but decided to return to South Africa to pursue her career in entertainment as a performer on the electric harp.
