Andre Mun
Security advisor at Alwinco
Over the years I have identified four key elements that play a role in every crime scene.
1. Victims are not informed about the best ways to secure their property.
2. Victims are not in control before or after a criminal attack.
3. Victims seldom have security plans for the future.
4. Victims have never conducted a Security Risk Assessment

Every security manager or facility manager should know how to conduct a security risk assessment. Unfortunately, the experience which gives rise to competency in this field is not always available. Conducting a good security risk assessment requires in-depth knowledge of criminal tactics and crime scenes and experience in the crime prevention field.
Hardly a day goes by without some kind of violent crime being reported and there is still an unacceptably high crime-related death toll. The government's failure to answer its call to action has led to a fatalistic attitude among citizens who seem to have come to a point of jaded acceptance regarding our crime rate. Tragically, many of the horrific incidents we read about in the newspapers could easily have been avoided had the victims been armed with simple crime preparedness tactics.
It is assumed that an alarm system, electric fence or another security device will offer added if not adequate protection; however, this logic is fundamentally flawed. It is not the mere presence of some kind of security hardware which protects people from crime; it is the considered application of a situation appropriate system or assemblage of systems that protect people from crime.
One of the primary shortcomings in the security field is that the business owner or homeowner is almost always the person who decides what kind of security system or systems should be implemented on his or her premises.
While we do not wish to challenge anyone's right to do whatever they wish in order to protect themselves, the relevant concern here is that most home and business owners have absolutely no expertise or experience in the field of crime prevention, no knowledge of criminal tactics and are, in fact, not sufficiently informed to be making this decision.
Catering to the demands of this market are salespeople who, while they might have an excellent working knowledge of the equipment they sell, also have no experience working with investigations or crime scenes. Moreover, they are commission driven to sell specific pieces of equipment which may not provide adequate or even suitable protection to their clients.
The only way to ensure situation appropriate protection measures is to call in an experienced, knowledgeable, independent and unaffiliated third party to advise clients how best to secure their property through implementation of various systems which correspond to the specific weaknesses inherent in the operations and layout of each premise after having done a multi-faceted assessment of the property and surrounding area; this is the job of the independent security risk assessment consultant.
Many of our clients have been shocked to learn how vulnerable they were despite the security measures they had already taken once a security risk assessment was done on their behalf.
