Major British media firm merger planned

British Granada Media plc and Carlton Communications, the two largest independent television companies in the UK, have unveiled plans to merge. Both groups produce programmes for Britain's private Independent Television network (ITV) and are ITV's biggest shareholders. The new ITV would be 68%-owned by Granada shareholders and 32%-owned by Carlton shareholders. A final agreement on the merger would require regulatory approval.
