Shoprite employs the disadvantaged
The Shoprite Group has employed 550 deaf and hard-of-hearing South Africans. This makes it the first time some of the new employees have been in a working environment.
Shoprite, in partnership with Employ and Empower Deaf (eDeaf), have been offering an NQF level two wholesale and retail chain store operation qualification to disadvantaged deaf and hard-of-hearing people for the last nine years.
The learners who take part in this qualification are recruited and trained by deaf facilitators using South African Sign Language (SASL), thereafter they are placed in a Shoprite or Checkers supermarket for a one-year learnership.
