Studying Graphic Design

My son is keen on doing Graphic Design. I've had a look around at courses and also individual packages and they all seem pretty pricey. Are there any merits to getting these software packages at home and him teaching himself? Also, are his chances of being employed greatly lessened if he doesn't have "formal" training.
