"This data is unique in that it gives us for the first time an accurate global ranking of the popularity of brands online," said Daniel Dearlove, founder of Famecount.com. "It is interesting to see established offline brands perform so strongly. This highlights the growing importance of social media in wider marketing campaigns, as well as the applicability of these channels to established brands, which may not have had a significant online presence previously. Social networks are helping them to tap into wider audiences and strengthen communications with existing consumers."

Facebook & Twitter outshine Google and Apple on an aggregated basis

The study also examined the popularity of traditional and new-media brands across these three channels. Thanks to their phenomenal Facebook success, US developer Zynga sees two of its games, Texas Hold 'Em and Mafia Wars, lead the index with 98.2% and 78.5% respectively. Texas Hold 'Em also has the world's most popular Facebook page with 19m fans.

Facebook ranked third with a Famecount index of 71.1%, while Twitter - which does not have a dedicated YouTube channel - ranked fifth behind CNN (66.2%) with a Famecount index of 64.9%. Both outranked Google on an aggregated basis. The search giant recorded 1.3 million Facebook fans, 2.3 million Twitter followers, and 153,025 YouTube subscribers, resulting in a Famecount index of 61.9%. They also outranked iTunes, in 11th place with a Famecount index of 60.9%. The NBA is the world's top sports brand, with a Famecount index of 63.4%.
