SABC board holds emergency meeting

SABC group executives yesterday, 15 April, held an emergency meeting to deal with recent media reports signalling a looming battle between the SABC board and senior management of the organisation.

According to a statement released by the corporation, the executive is also concerned about the leakage of a memorandum written by the chairperson of the board to the media and by alleged factual inaccuracies both in the media articles, as well as the leaked memorandum, which is the source of information.

The executive resolved to prepare a detailed response to correct these “glaring inaccuracies” and elected ‘chief people officer', Phumelele Ntombela-Nzimande, as spokesperson on this issue.

According to the statement, “the executive unanimously expressed confidence and support of the leadership of the Group CEO Dali Mpofu and reiterates its commitment to the principle of collective leadership and takes collective responsibility for all decisions taken in pursuit of SABC's vision and strategy.”

“Due to the urgency of this matter, the Group Executive has further resolved to seek a meeting with the SABC Board, no later than end of this week, after which a more detailed communication will be made to our internal and external stakeholders,” says Ntombela-Nzimande.

“In the meantime, we urge staff and citizens to focus and not lose sight of our mandate and vision of ‘Broadcasting for Total Citizen Empowerment', especially in the light of the recent positive human science research council findings that, with the exception of the religious sector, the SABC enjoys the highest public trust amongst South Africa's private and public sector institutions.”
