The bubbly and outspoken actress is renowned for her role as the matriarch and matron Sister Bettina of the health communications drama Soul City.

This top-rated television programme has starred Dube since inception 14 years ago. In a twist of irony, she played the role of a woman who was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix in the drama two years ago. She also stars in Muvhango.

Dube said in a statement: “My cancer was discovered in a routine checkup. In fact the first mammogram didn't pick it up. It was only when I went again the following year that the radiographer noticed it. I was sent for a biopsy which revealed the cancerous cells. Because early detection is key, I appeal to women over the age of 40 to go for annual mammograms."

Soul City, Word of Mouth Pictures and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) have wished their colleague and friend all the strength and support during this time.

A prayer meeting has been called by Word of Mouth Pictures and Soul City at the SABC today, 8 January. Fans have been asked to keep Dube in their prayers.

Duma Ndlovu, executive producer of Muvhango said: “The plight of artists is a major concern to us. We want to rally support for Lillian and help her to disseminate these important messages about cancer.”
