Food and beverage income climbs

Total income from the food and beverages sectors in South Africa increased in nominal terms (current prices) by 4.2% year-on-year (y/y) in June‚ according to data from Statistics South Africa.

A positive annual growth rate was recorded for food sales (5.9%).

Total income increased by 5.9% in the three months ended June 2014 compared with the same three months last year. The main contributors to this increase were takeaway and fast-food outlets‚ restaurants and coffee shops.

The food and beverages survey is a monthly survey covering a sample of tax-paying public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption.

The purpose of the survey is to monitor trends in the food and beverages industry. The figures are also used in the analysis of comparative business and industry performance.
