#OnetheBigScreen: Tenent, Ava, Fatima, My Spy
Tenet
Most people see time as an unalterable dynamic of our existence, but in the hands of filmmaker Christopher Nolan, it becomes a compellingly tractable thread, able to be bent, twisted, juxtaposed or inverted in Tenet.
John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle. Armed with only one word - Tenet - and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.
Ava
In this action-packed crime-thriller, Jessica Chastain steps into the shoes of a deadly assassin who works for a black ops organisation, travelling the globe specialising in high profile hits. Ava’s career takes a bad turn when a high-profile job goes wrong due to faulty information provided to her. With a botched hit (as well as a track record for questioning the validity of her targets), Ava is told to take a hiatus until the heat blows over, but secretly the head of the organisation, Simon (Colin Farrell) has ordered a hit on her to ensure nothing traces back to the company.
With the recent death of her father, Ava decides to go back home to Boston and attempt to mend her relationship with her mother (Geena Davis) and sister, Judy, though the homecoming proves to be far from happy as the years of estrangement have created resentment. To complicate things further, Ava’s ex-fiancé, Michael is now in a relationship with Judy and involved with an underground gambling ring that Ava knows all too well from her younger days. Ava now has to save her family and herself from multiple threats, while battling her own demons. Directed by Tate Taylor and written by Matthew Newton.
Fatima
In the powerful and uplifting film Fatima, a 10-year-old shepherd and her two younger cousins in Fátima, Portugal, report visions of the Virgin Mary, inspiring thousands of believers and angering officials of both the Catholic Church and the secularist government, who try to force them to recant their story.
Throughout the Catholic world, the Portuguese town of Fátima is renowned for the miraculous appearance of the Blessed Virgin to three young shepherds in 1917. A small farming district at the time, it became internationally famous for the prophecies the children claimed to have received, making it a revered religious site visited by some six million pilgrims annually. Now, the power of its legacy has brought together an eclectic international group of cinema artists who believe that Fátima’s miraculous message of faith and peace, which galvanised the world over a century ago, is more important than ever.
My Spy
In this action-comedy directed by Peter Segal, nine-year-old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) catches JJ, a hardened CIA operative (Dave Bautista), spying on her family during a routine surveillance operation. In exchange for not blowing his cover, JJ begrudgingly agrees to show the precocious girl how to become a spy. What at first seems like an easy task soon turns into a battle of wits as Sophie proves you don't need much experience to outsmart a seasoned agent. Despite his reluctance, JJ finds he is no match for Sophie’s disarming charm and wit.
