Exciting 2012 season for Jhb Music Society
This uniquely stylish cross-over ensemble has an enthusiastic following and they'll be offering a Gershwin Songbook evening of works such as the evergreen 'Rhapsody in Blue' as well as some of George Gershwin's most popular songs. 'Fascinating Rhythm', 'I Got Plenty o'Nuttin' and 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off' are part of the mix.
In October, one of the world's more phenomenal pianists will play for the JMS. Konstantin Scherbakov is known for his unusual programmes, which include works previously considered unplayable. He'll be performing, amongst other pieces, solo piano versions of works such as Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique' and Liszt's 'Totentanz'.
Performance by winner of Cleveland International Piano Competition
Other pianists on the schedule are young-and-upcoming Alexander Lubyantsev (March) and Pallavi Mahidhara (April). In August the winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, will perform for JMS audiences and in November Inon Barnaton - who has just been featured at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival in the USA - will play the final concert of
the year.
There is also the superb German cellist, Wolfgang Emmanuel Schmidt (late September), a piano, violin and cello trio from the British Isles called the Fidelio Trio (early September), and a prodigious young sister and brother violin/piano duo. This combination, in June, features Avigail and Ammiel Bushakewitz, both of whom were born in Israel but who spent much of their childhood in South Africa.
All the Society's concerts take place at the Linder Auditorium on the Wits Education Campus in St Andrews Road, Parktown. For full details of the 2012 JMS season, including programmes and pictures of the artists, go to www.jms.org.za.
