Durban fashion comes home for expo

The first ever Durban Fashion Extravaganza, a three-day fashion show featuring Durban-born fashion designers and models will take place from 2-4 June 2011 at the Docklands Hotel and Moyo Pier from 7pm each evening. During the three days, a trunk sale will be held at the Docklands Hotel between 10am and 6pm, to provide retail space for all participating designers.

The show will feature some of the city's finest big name exports - Gavin Rajah, Malcolm Klûk, Dax Martin, Craig Native, Fundudzi - and is a showcase for invited design houses - Carducci, Liz Ogumbo, Terrence Bray and new young designers from the Durban University Of Technology.

The first day kicks off with a Young Designers Collective, featuring collections by top second and third year students from the Durban University of Technology and Linear Academy. Guest designer and recording artist Liz Ogumbo makes a special appearance, presenting a collection from her label. House of Monatic will close the first day festivities with its latest collections from Carducci women and Carducci C-squared.

Day two will feature Durban-born fashion designer Gavin Rajah, making his return to the catwalk after a two-year absence with a collection of his signature frocks. Also on show, the crowned Designers of the Year at the recent Arise Magazine Fashion Week held in Lagos, Klûk CGDT, will showcase its winning designs.

Fundudzi, the country's eco-friendly fashion label will showcase sustainable fashions alongside fellow designers such as Craig Native, and swimwear designer Dax Martin.

The show will feature Durban-born models on the runway, including former Miss South Africa Claudia Henkel; Miriam Ngomani and Calvin Klein model and Selimathunzi presenter Lunga Shabalala.

"We, at the Lifestyle Oasis, are proud to bring home some of Durban's top designers, models and to unearth the new design talent in Durban," says Simphiwe Tshabalala, event organiser. "This is the beginning of what we foresee to be a continuous event that highlights and acknowledges what the city of Durban has to offer. In future, we hope to include music, the arts and other creative fields, but this year the focus is on fashion."

All proceeds from this event will benefit The Pathways, which serves severely disabled children who have been deemed by the state as uneducable.
