Petersen's record day at the Wanderers

Alviro Petersen completed his second century of the match for the bizhub Highveld Lions to provide the highlight of the final day of the SuperSport Series competiton at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

Petersen, having made 129 in the first innings against the new champions, the Nashua Titans, reached 105 not out in his second innings (114 balls, 184) before home captain Neil McKenzie applied the declaration, leaving the Titans to make 334 for victory.

In the process Petersen passed HD Ackerman's record of 1 373 first-class runs in a season in South Africa by a home player (i.e. excluding touring players.

He equalled the record of 6 first-class centuries in a season in South Africa by a home player held by Barry Richards (1969/70), MikeProcter (1970/71) and Peter Kirsten (1976/77).

He also became the first player to score two centuries in a match twice in the same season in first-class cricket in South Africa.

This was the 3rd occasion in his career that he has scored 2 centuries in a match. The only other South Africans who have scored 2 centuries in a match on 3 occasions are: Jimmy Cook, Peter Kirsten, Martin van Jaarsveld and Kepler Wessels.

The Titans made a pretty good crack at the target, reaching 250/3 before the match was called off. Jacques Rudolph made the fifth century of the match, finishing on 126 not out off 146 balls with 22 fours. He and Faf du Plessis (65 not out off 77 balls, 9x4) added an unbroken 143 for the fourth wicket in only 28 overs.
