The Wings for Life World Run returns to South Africa on 8 May 2016, and for the first time, local participants will run from SuperSport Park in Centurion, Pretoria. The 2016 event has a unique route through Centurion and into Irene, before winding back toward SuperSport Park.

The Wings For Life World Run is one-of-a-kind global fundraising adventure that takes place in 35 international locations simultaneously, in varying light and weather conditions. The cause - finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. One hundred percent of all entry fees and donations contributed by the Wings for Life World Run participants and their friends and families, goes to spinal cord research projects.

This is the world's only race that has no finish line - instead, a catcher car chases down participants, ending their race as the car overtakes them. The unique race format means that South Africans of any and all running abilities - from beginners to dedicated athletes - can take part, as can competitors in standard wheelchairs.

    You set your own target

Rally champion, self-professed 'Fastest Brother in Africa' and Wings for Life World Run Ambassador Gugu Zulu is excited to be taking part again in 2016: "In my first race, I managed just over 8km before the catcher car got me and I'd love to beat that next time around. That's what is great about this race, you set your own target and take part for an incredible cause."

South Africa's Riana van Niekerk finished second in the world in the 2015 women's race, while Lemawork Ketema of Ethiopia was men's Global Champion. The 2015 event had 101,280 participants in 33 countries across 12 time zones raising 4.2 million euros (approximately R67 million) for Wings for Life.

As in 2016, the entire event was followed by viewers across the globe, thanks to an enthralling live-stream experience, which shares the effort, elation and emotion of the runners.
