An African celebration for marketers

A collaboration of Jozi's poets, artists, storytellers, brand specialists and cultural activists are holding an event at the Unity Gallery on 12 November 2005 called First Fruits - A Celebration. The event is specifically aimed at marketers, the business community and others seeking to gain an understanding of the nature of Jozi's urban cultural evolution.

The First Fruits event is divided into three components: spoken word education workshops at a local high school, a spoken word event at Newtown's Couch and Coffee and a day event at Braamfontein's Unity Gallery.

Prophet JD, a spoken word performer and one of the event organizers, says: "First Fruits is about artists of all sorts beginning to interact creatively with national days and events. We are currently in the time of the First Fruits - a long standing African celebration that needs to be redefined in urban present.

"The event at the Unity Gallery is specifically targeted at corporates and marketers - people who are aware that a new urban culture is taking root in Joburg, but don't really know what it is, or how to access it. The event caters specifically to block bookings for companies who want to give their staff a taste of our new creative culture."

The Unity Gallery event will feature an eclectic line up of performers, all of whom will be interacting with the First Fruits theme. From socially conscious (and occasionally revolutionary) spoken word poetry to lectures on the role of poetry in business and the art of urban organic food production, First Fruits - a Celebration offers real cultural insight.
