42 seal watchers rescued at Duiker Island

A group of people watching the seals off Duiker Island near Hout Bay had to be rescued when their boat was pushed onto the rocks. The National Sea Rescue Institute's spokesman Craig Lambinon said the boat, carrying 42 people, was pushed onto the rocks by a large wave on Sunday afternoon (9 October 2011).

The Citizen says that the boat appeared to have some damage to its hull and was taking on water. However, the NSRI boat accompanied the charter vessel back to Hout Bay where it was safely moored and all the passengers disembarked.

Regular seal-watching tours to Duiker Island are conducted by a number of charter groups in Cape Town and have proved incredibly popular with thousands of tourists who are keen to see the large population of Cape Fur seals that make the island their home.
