Food, beverage sales up 5.4%

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry increased in nominal terms (current prices) by 5.4% year-on-year in February according to figures released by Statistics SA (Stats SA) on Monday, 22 April 2013.

The highest annual growth was recorded in the other income sector (21.9%)‚ followed by bar sales (14.2%) and food sales (4.1%).

The monthly food and beverages survey covers a sample of public and private enterprises involved in the preparation of meals and drinks for immediate consumption in SA. The purpose of this survey is to monitor trends in the food and beverages industry.

The results of the survey are used to compile estimates of the tourism satellite accounts and the gross domestic product (GDP) and its components. The figures are also used in the analysis of comparative business and industry performance.

A breakdown of the figures showed that the annual growth rate in February for takeaway and fast-food outlets was 8.2%, contributing 2.8 percentage points‚ followed by restaurants and coffee shops with a 4.0% increase, contributing 1.9 percentage points; and catering services, also with a 4.0% increase but making only a 0.7 percentage point contribution.

Total income rose by 8.0% in the rirst three months of this year compared.
