Shoprite transports water for citizens

In addition to the 119,920 litres of fresh drinking water donated to various communities affected by South Africa's crippling drought, the Shoprite Group is also assisting with the transportation of more than 60,000 litres of water collected by ordinary South Africans.

Four Shoprite trucks delivered approximately 45,000 litres of water to the Swartruggens community in the North West province on Saturday, 16 January 2016.

Two Shoprite trucks collected a total of 17,340 litres of water in Pretoria earlier this week and transported it to the towns of Koppies, Ventersburg, and Warden in the Free State, and Delareyville in the North West province. Staff from the Shoprite U-Save stores in these areas ensured that the water was then further distributed to the local clinic, hospital and vulnerable community members such as the elderly, women and children.

The Shoprite Group would like to commend the South African public, which has rallied together to collect water for the numerous drought-stricken communities across the country.

The supermarket group will continue drought-relief efforts: a Shoprite truck with 24,640 litres of bottled water is heading to northern KwaZulu-Natal early next week, whilst assistance with the transportation of water collected by members of the public will continue.

Selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets are also selling water at cost price in areas with water shortages, whilst collection trolleys are available in these stores for customers to donate water should they wish to do so.
