Thami Msimango has been appointed MD of the Telkom International Business Unit, the South African telecommunications giant said on Wednesday 15 April 2009.
New MD for Telkom International

On 1 April 2009, he was appointed acting MD of the Business Unit, one of three newly created operating units that became functional under the new Telkom Group structure from the beginning of the month.

Msimango retains his position as MD of Multi-Links, a 100% Telkom-owned Nigerian private telecommunications operator.

"The appointment will go a long way towards supporting the strategic focus and vision of the Telkom International Business Unit as well as in refocusing the overall imperatives of the Telkom Group.

"I have no doubt that his experience will help Telkom realise the anticipated revenue streams from our acquisition of Multi-Links," said Telkom Group CEO Reuben September.

Msimango brings a wealth of expertise to his new position in the Telkom Group.

Having joined Telkom in 1984, he progressed through the ranks and gained widespread experience in critical areas such as business process re-engineering as well as network planning and construction.

In 1999, Msimango was appointed regional executive responsible for infrastructure provisioning for the Gauteng region before becoming the national executive for the Integrated Technology Application Strategy in 2001.

Following his appointment as managing executive of Technology Network Services in 2003, he became Telkom's chief technical officer in 2005.

This portfolio included infrastructure provisioning, network installation and repair, network management and network service management.

After a brief stint at Vodacom, he rejoined Telkom and became the company's chief of global operations and subsidiaries.

"A new vista of opportunities and markets are available on the African continent and, with the support of Telkom's Exco and my staff, I'll be looking to explore avenues to optimise on our investments and deliver on other key Telkom priorities such as enhanced customer focus, growth in the area of mobile capability, shareholder value creation, together with a major turnaround in the profitability of Multi-Links," said Msimango.

On 1 April 2009 Telkom International became operational with two other Business Units, namely, Telkom SA and Telkom Data Centre Operations.

Nombulelo "Pinky" Moholi was announced as the MD of Telkom SA on 26 March 2009 and will assume her position on 1 May.

Appointments in relation to Telkom's Data Centre Operations will be made in due course.
