Knock and drops rewarding quality
Winners for the 2004 Caxton Excellence Awards, designed to promote and maintain superior quality in Caxton's array of community newspapers, were announced this week, including the Best Sold newspaper, Best Free newspaper, Most Promising Journalist, Journalist of the Year and Best Hard News Photograph.
And the winners are:
Best Sold Newspaper with circulation of 8 000 or more: Lowvelder, editor Irma Green for the second year running.
Best Free Newspaper with pagination of 24 or more: Benoni City Times, editor Hilary Green.
Journalist of the Year: Buks Viljoen, Lowvelder
Most Promising Journalist of the Year - jointly awarded to Marisa le Roux, Northside Chronicle and Gloria van der Westhuizen, Springs & Brakpan Advertiser.
Best Investigative Reporting: Samantha Wade, Newcastle Advertiser for 'The Rise and Fall of Uthukela Water and the Ratepayer Rebellion'.
Best Sports Writing: David Rush, South Coast Herald
Best Hard News Photograph: Lynne Wilton from Middelburg Observer for 'Waar het Ek die Hanne Gekry'.
Best Sports Photograph: Ronald Sibiya from Umlozi Wezindaba for 'Taking it on the Chin'.
The panel of judges selected for this year's Caxton Excellence Awards included: Mark Robinson, Spar; Sharon Leach, Relyant Retail; Debbie McIntyre, Caxton Magazines; Pieter Malan, Rapport; Michelle Schreuder, Elle Magazine; Bruce Sturgeon, Caxton; Lisa Milton, The Citizen and Alice Vorster, Caxton.
