The Market Photo Workshop, in association with AngloGold Ashanti, runs the mentorship programme, which is open to all photographers looking to expand their skills and abilities through the programme. All applicants are expected to work closely with a mentor as well as the Market Photo Workshop including regular meetings and reports.

Entries for the 2010 Edward Ruiz Mentorship are now open and close on Friday 13 August 2010 at 4pm. A voluntary briefing session will be held at the Market Photo Workshop on Thursday 22 July 2010 at 2pm. This briefing will cover the application, and proposal writing process. Applicants not residing in Johannesburg are encouraged to contact Molemo Moiloa with any queries.

The mentorship awards the recipient with the financial and infrastructural support needed to develop a substantial body of photography work over the course of a year. The body of work will be exhibited as a solo exhibition at The Photo Workshop Gallery, which will be funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the National Arts Council of South Africa.

This programme commemorates the life of renowned photo journalist Edward Ruiz, a native New Yorker and freelance journalist who photographed the people and stories of South Africa from 1999.

Requirements

Applications must include the following:

  • comprehensive CV
  • existing portfolio of 15-20 photographs. Submit 2 bodies of work maximum (printed or electronically, 1024 mm x 768 mm)
  • 500 words explaining your photographic interests and existing work
  • 1000 word project proposal
  • If not based in Johannesburg, a local mentor proposal, including references for the proposed mentor

The project proposal should address the following areas:

  • project must be within the borders of South Africa
  • focus, meaning and intention of the proposed project
  • How the project relates to your broader work evident in your portfolio
  • importance of the proposed project
  • How you intend to manage your project
