'Training of Trainers' journalism course

Journalists and media trainers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region have until December 15 to apply for a new "Training of Trainers" program organized by the Institute for the Further Education of Journalists (Fojo), a Swedish media assistance group, and the Mozambique-based NSJ Trust.

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) is sponsoring the two-week seminar program, which is scheduled for March 8 to 19 in Mbabane, Swaziland. The Swedish government, through Sida, will cover all the costs for international travel to and from Swaziland, along with the costs for the participants' meals and accommodations.

The seminar will focus on training journalism trainers to work within an African context. Participants will discuss curriculum development strategies, evaluation methods, and specific training subjects, such as gender, journalism ethics, and journalism and democracy.

Sida says a fundamental principle of the program is to provide the participants an opportunity to discuss their individual ideas and experiences. "In that sense the seminar is, more than anything else, an opportunity for a regional exchange of experiences," the Sida brochure states.

Twenty active trainers, or senior journalists interested in becoming trainers, from the SADC-region will be selected to attend. Participants must have a good command of the English language.
