Join the debate - Is press freedom under threat in South Africa?

At the third AMASA event in Cape Town on 15 April 2015, Songezo Zibi, Editor of Business Day, will be discussing whether the press and the freedom to expression and information (freedom of press) are under fire in South Africa. This topic has been at the centre of public discussion for a number of years and affects everyone in South Africa.

The new Protection of State Information Bill replaces the Protection of State Information Act of 1982. The new bill and its amendments have been passed by National Assembly and Council of Provinces, however President Jacob Zuma refused to sign it into law in September of 2013. It was subsequently sent back to National Assembly for reconsideration

In light of the provisions of the Protection of State Information Bill, the jamming of parliament's signal and the public denunciation of media dissent by various politicians, we ask, "Is the South Africa media's freedom to inform the public under threat?"

The event takes place at 17.30. For directions to the venue click here.
