''Lights-on'' campaign to reduce road deaths over December

The National Department of Transport is running a nationwide "lights-on" campaign from the 1st to 31st December 2003, during which motorists will be asked to drive with their headlights on during the day – and to reduce their speed.

The campaign aims to reduce accidents by increasing visibility on the roads, particularly by making cars more visible to pedestrians.

"We are calling on all road users to support this campaign and to drive with their headlights on at all times during December," says Wendy Watson, General Manager: Land Transport Regulation at the National Department of Transport. "Research in Europe indicates that there is a significant decrease in crashes when motorists driver with their lights on during the day."

The campaign goes hand-in-hand with a commitment to keep to a speed that is 5km/h below the limit. "In joining this campaign, motorists will be demonstrating their personal commitment to road safety," says Watson. "We're asking them to take that a step further by reducing their speed. Please show your support: put your headlights on and lift your foot – and let's all Arrive Alive."
