Innovation becomes meaningful when it moves people forward

How MakeReign and Khula used human-centred design to turn a fragmented agricultural journey into a connected digital ecosystem.
Innovation becomes meaningful when it moves people forward

Our work with Khula was recently recognised with eight Pixels at the 2026 IAB South Africa Bookmark Awards, including four Golds across strategy, interactive design, technology and digital platforms.

That recognition celebrates the multidisciplinary craft behind the Khula ecosystem. But the more meaningful measure of the work is what it enables for the people and businesses it was designed to serve.

Innovation is often associated with novelty: a new technology, a new feature or an idea that hasn’t existed before. But newness alone doesn’t create value.

Meaningful innovation changes what people are able to do. It begins with understanding where they’re struggling, what’s preventing them from progressing and how a product or service could offer a genuinely better way forward.

For innovation to create impact, people need to find it useful enough to adopt. It must fit into the realities of their lives, solve a problem that matters and improve on the alternatives available to them.

This belief has shaped our work with Khula, a South African agritech business transforming how emerging farmers access the inputs, buyers and finance they need to grow.

Innovation begins with understanding the struggle

For emerging farmers, building a sustainable agricultural business involves far more than producing a successful crop. Farmers need the right inputs at the right time, funding to support production, buyers for what they grow and confidence that a market will exist when it’s time to harvest.

These needs are closely connected, yet the systems supporting them have often been fragmented. A farmer may have to engage with different suppliers, buyers, funders and programme partners, each with its own processes and information requirements. At every stage, they may need to provide the same details, navigate another unfamiliar system and establish their credibility again.

Khula saw an opportunity that extended beyond digitising individual workflows: to connect the agricultural journey and create a more coordinated ecosystem for farmers and industry partners alike.

Designing around progress

Together with Khula, MakeReign helped translate this ambition into an interconnected suite of products. Khula Inputs gives farmers access to more than 4,000 agricultural products. Khula Trader connects farmers with buyers and enables them to secure crop contracts. Khula Money creates a simpler route to production finance by allowing farmers to apply to multiple funding partners through one process. Supporting dashboards give suppliers and programme partners greater visibility across the ecosystem.

Innovation becomes meaningful when it moves people forward

Each product plays a distinct role, but their real value comes from how they work together. A farmer’s activity in one part of the ecosystem can support progress in another. Their profile, history and data can move with them, reducing duplication and helping to establish the trust needed to access new opportunities.

Today, Khula serves more than 20,000 farmers. Behind that number are people gaining access to products, markets and financial opportunities that can help them build more sustainable businesses. That’s innovation expressed through progress rather than novelty.

Designing the system and the experience

Creating a connected ecosystem requires more than designing a collection of screens. It means understanding the relationships between people, processes and technologies, including the operational and institutional activity happening beyond the interface.

Throughout the partnership, we had to consider questions such as:

  • How does someone with varying levels of digital confidence enter the ecosystem?
  • What does each person need to know or do at a particular stage?
  • How can shared information reduce friction without introducing unnecessary complexity?
  • How should the products account for the realities of connectivity and device access?

These aren’t only interface questions. They’re service, operational and strategic questions that demand a view of the whole system.

Design helps organisations understand the progress customers are trying to make and align the product, technology and business around enabling it.

Adoption is where innovation creates value

A product doesn’t create impact simply because it’s launched. Its value emerges when people choose to use it and it helps them achieve a better outcome. That’s why successful innovation requires ongoing discovery, testing and refinement.

Our work on the Khula ecosystem wasn’t based on an abstract idea of what agricultural technology could be. It was grounded in the realities of farmers, suppliers, buyers, funders and programme partners, each with different needs, constraints and measures of success.

Connecting customer value and business value

Human-centred innovation is sometimes treated as being solely about improving the customer experience. The strongest opportunities, however, create progress for customers and value for the organisation.

For farmers, Khula creates more connected access to inputs, buyers and funding. For suppliers and funders, it provides access to a network of farmers, improved visibility and better-informed participation. For Khula, the ecosystem creates a foundation from which it can expand its services, strengthen its network and scale its impact.

This is where innovation becomes a driver of digital transformation. It changes how customers experience a service, how an organisation operates and what the business is capable of delivering.

Designing around those realities helped create products that aren’t only technically capable, but relevant and usable in the context they were built for.

Turning ambition into progress

The Khula partnership demonstrates what can happen when industry knowledge, customer understanding, strategy, design and technology are brought together around a shared ambition.

At MakeReign, we work with organisations to uncover meaningful opportunities, understand the people and systems involved, and translate that understanding into digital products and services that create measurable value.

It’s not innovation for the sake of being new. It’s innovation designed to be useful, adopted and capable of producing a better outcome than what existed before.
