Hambe kahle, Deon du Plessis

It is with much sadness that we pay tribute today to Daily Sun founder and publisher Deon du Plessis, who, as Mandy de Waal puts it, has gone on his great sabbatical in the sky. Tragically, Du Plessis died from acute bronchitis this weekend at the age of 59 in his home in Johannesburg, just as he was about to take three months' sabbatical.

Du Plessis loved to say in his weekly blog posts as publisher, "This is how we roll it in Sunland" - and this swashbuckling phrase sums the man up, too, writes Gill Moodie. "He was larger than life, rambunctious and generous - a genius newspaper man with ink in his veins, feared and fearless but, above all, the visionary who started this country's tabloid newspaper industry when he opened the Daily Sun nine years ago."

Bizcommunity.com extends our condolences to family, friends and colleagues. He may be gone, but he won't be forgotten.

SA fails to brand itself at IAAF World Championships
[Bonnie Ramaila] While watching the recent International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships (held in Daegu, South Korea) on TV, I critically observed that most athletes' T-shirts, especially those from Europe and Asia, proudly displayed the names of their countries with big, bold letters. iMaverick is too long; NewsNow is for chicks
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] When the Daily Maverick first launched in 2009, the lack of layout gradation really bothered me. Year of the minnows!
[Corné Krige] The first round of World Cup games is now over and what an exciting round of rugby it was. There was probably only one runaway game and that was the opening game between host country New Zealand and Tonga, and that scoreline was flattering to the All Blacks. The rest of the games were all really tight affairs and the so-called minnows all ran their more favoured opponents close. The two outstanding performers for me were Romania and Japan. Read more >>

I have always been proud to be South African, but that amount of support really took my patriotism to another level. I tried to remember what our farewell was like in 2003 and my memories were very vague. This confirms my suspicion that it was nothing like what we saw last Thursday in Sandton. Read more >>
