A gathering of mavericks

So last week Thursday, 4 November 2010, I unglued myself from my laptop and the daily newsletter and headed off to Sandton's Theatre on the Square for The Gathering, a first-birthday celebration by The Daily Maverick intended to be an intimate gathering of minds, analysis, and people. And what a day of conversation it turned out to be! It was easily the most meaningful, thought-provoking and emotionally involving conference I've attended this year, with most presenters speaking with deep conviction on matters close to their hearts.

With topics ranging from politics, media freedom and the future of online media to the youth of South Africa, marketing wine in China and Africa and the value of science fiction, we heard from Rich Mulholland, Terry Annecke, Zwelinzima Vavi, Yusuf Abramjee, Ray Hartley, Michael Jordaan, Jovan Regasek, Nic Dawes (via proxy, an email that was read out), Khaya Dlanga, Victor Dlamini, Mike Ratcliffe, Yvonne Johnston, Lauren Beukes, Ivo Vegter (assisted by Sipho Hlongwane), Toby Shapshak and Stephen Grootes, not to mention Gwede Mantashe, a last-minute, unexpected addition to the lineup who set off fireworks and caused a time-crunch.

Then there was the on-the-ball audience, some physically in attendance and who knows how many via the ubiquitous back-channel Twitter, of course (there were so many tweets at one stage during the morning that the hashtag #Gathering trended globally at number four). I generally find that the most fascinating part of a conference to be the question-and-answers sessions, and they were no exception this time - it's just such a pity that we ran out of time, thanks to Mantashe being shoehorned in.

Kudos to everyone involved in bringing off such a sterling event - may you continue to grow from strength to strength.

Here's to the crazy ones!

Mercury retrenches third of staff following GCIS move
[Herman Manson: @marklives] Media placement house Mercury has had to retrench 10 staff members following a decision by the Government Communication and Information Service (GCIS) to centralise control of Government's R1.7 billion annual advertising budget (including departmental). The GCIS was a long-standing client of Mercury, which has had considerable success in attracting business from government departments and parastatals over the years. Read more >>

Vodacom: we're not having it
[Bonnie Ramaila] It took me a while to make up my mind about Vodacom's 'Surf for Free' ads - it wasn't until I read a 'gossip and chart' report received via some SMS info service, to which my cellphone-geek daughter subscribed me. I don't normally pay attention to the gossip bit, but it turns out that I share the same sentiments as Sir Elton John, but regarding our ad industry lately. [video] Read more >>

Can Banyana rebrand the business of soccer?
[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] When the 2010 African Women Championships (AWC) kicked off on Sunday, 31 October 2010, at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton in front of a near capacity crowd, the big questions were whether the brand of South African soccer would be the real winner and whether the host team would be able to usher in a legacy in soccer development, similar to their US counterparts. Meanwhile, according to IOL, tweeters have been paralytic with mirth over Julius Malema's threat to close Twitter, the ANCYL says 'white reactionaries' will be 'exposed' (what does it actually mean by that?) but Gwede Mantashe is not fazed at all by impersonators on Twitter, as reported by The Daily Maverick. You simply pointed at it and said: "that one" and merely described the colour and shape. Read more >>
