Not a time for complacency It doesn't seem to matter which government South Africa has. We, the media, must still constantly fight for our press freedom, without which we all suffer. Right now, there are two issues to worry about: the ANC-proposed media tribunal, and the proposed amendments to the Protection of Information Bill. The South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) has even resolved to work with other like-minded groups in a campaign for public support for media freedom, with various newspapers and educational organisations pledging sums of money towards the campaign. This is not a time for complacency. We must stand united to protect our democracy and our country. Make your voices heard! Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz) Managing editor PS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for Audi A4, FIFA, Nedbank, Mercedes Benz and Nescafé, and radio ads for Hyundai, Lexus, M-Net, LG and Toyota. Master marketer Jake White does it again [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] If former Springbok rugby coach Jake White had been born 100 years earlier, he would have been an extremely successful snake oil salesman. Following on from his perfect timing when he very controversially quit as 'Bok coach just as his book was about to be released and which then sold like hotcakes as a result, he chose this past weekend to announce to the world that he would be looking to get his old job back at the end of the Rugby World Cup next year. Debate is ongoing over South Africa's showing as the host nation, the future of the mega-stadiums and what needs to be done to ensure Bafana Bafana builds on what was a heartening attempt to qualify for the second round of the FIFA showpiece. In this spirit of this enquiry, I think it appropriate to ask how well the local media performed during the world cup. Quintal decided to use the event to show the market (and her readers) that "as a newspaper The Mercury was not the conservative business read of old and could lead the way in terms of a fresh and different approach." She did this quite brilliantly through a series of editorial 'twinning' projects. The tournament dominated media coverage over several months, both in the build-up to and during the actual event. Newspapers sat between a rock and a hard place during the world cup, as television ruled with its live broadcasts and online was first with live commentary, opinion and blow-by blow recounts.
