Celebrity Scrabble tournaments

Pioneered by South African rap artist Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP), 42 celebrities including 5FM's DJs are challenging corporate South Africa to a Scrabble tournament in aid of child literacy and education. The proceeds will go to Active Learning Libraries - South Africa, whose mission is to increase the number of toy libraries that provide community access to toys that develop literacy skills.

The event takes place at 5FM, SABC Auckland Park, Johannesburg on Saturday 14 August 2010 from 1-5pm followed by a performance by HHP on the station's (Live)5 with Catherine Grenfell.

The DJs and celebrities confirmed to play against corporate sponsors include HHP, Gareth Cliff, Damon Kalvari, Leigh-Ann Mol, Elma Smit, Mabale Moloi, Thabo Modisane, Sias Du Plessis, Bongi Mbelu, Ntathi Moshesh, Shugasmaks, PJ Powers, Josie Field, the Black Hotels, Crash Car Burn, Isak Davel and more.

The event was inspired by HHP, as a Scrabble fan, to create a tournament to raise money for a meaningful charity involved in child literacy and education. He has mustered the support of his friends and colleagues who, together with the station, are challenging corporates to assist them in highlighting how important play is in learning and literacy. Companies who participate in the challenge will sponsor a celebrity of their choice and assign a corporate representative to play in the tournament.

Active Learning Libraries SA will operate an interactive play area to showcase age appropriate games critical for learning, language and cognitive development at the event.

Go to www.5fm.co.za for more information or email Nicki Wiggett on az.oc.niahcysiad@ikcin to sponsor a celebrity.
