Have you sent someone a strawberry dipped in chocolate recently? Dedicated a song to a friend? Connected with more than 50 clients and colleagues and friends in one day? Become a member of over 30 professional and hobby interest groups – all in one week? Thrown a sheep in jest? If you have, then you're a Facebook addict and well on your way to understanding the power of social networking. Facebook is the latest cyber craze sweeping the globe with more than 40 million users and a few hundred thousand new members signing up every day. Started as an academic network at Harvard, it now has networks in most academic institutions, high schools, company networks and country networks. As a tool for finding long lost pals, it's a lot of fun; as a business networking tool, it's unrivalled. While it might be considered a time waster by some companies banning its use during office hours and you may feel like you're back in the playground competing for popularity as to how many friends you have… it is a networking tool of note. Technology advances led to a disconnect in communication and a site like Facebook puts back the personality, the authentic voice so necessary in communication process. Much like citizen journalism is transforming the media world and individuals are demanding transparency in corporate and Government communication, Facebook provides a fun and interactive way to connect with your professional and personal networks. It's part of the social networking revolution that is impacting on the way we communicate professionally and personally. Last but not least, last week Monday our laptop theft video ended up being the most popular video viewed in a single day, ever, on local video- and photo-sharing site Zoopy.com, with a record 1183 views. That's the power of social networking!

Doing Business Report 2007 - Africa among top three reforming regions
Africa has moved from last place to third in this year's regional rankings for reforms that encourage new enterprises, formal sector jobs and growth, according to the recent World Bank/IFC report, Doing Business 2007: How to Reform.

    But it's permission-based marketing…
[Gino Cosme] I sit in on a lot of communication strategy sessions for strategically determining what communications activity will align with a business's objectives. In these sessions, I am always on the lookout for those elements and tactics that will in a very targeted and consistent manner communicate a business's messaging, but most importantly, speak with instead of to an audience that is willing to engage. And here's the crux. Some agencies just don't get it.

    Surviving the 21st century
[Dion Chang] We imagined life in the 21st century to be so different to what it really is. Technology was meant to be assisting us, making life easier and more efficient, but technology has proved to be a double-edged sword. We communicate faster, which then forces us to make quicker decisions and therefore live, perpetually, in the fast lane.

Crossing the chasm one step at a time
[Andrew Armstrong] Geoffery Moore's marketing theory of crossing the chasm offers marketers of innovative products ideas on how to take a new product and broaden its market appeal to gain acceptance in a wider market. Too often, it is the follower rather than the innovator of a product category that goes on to dominate the category.

    Knowledge gives you the edge
Armed with the right information and insights, you are better placed to make the right decisions, and implement the right strategies. And in times of financial and political uncertainty, it becomes even more important for business leaders to take stock of where we are, and where we're going – but how do you sift through the barrage of information that is out there? Next month's 2007 Flux Trend Review – a two-day, multi-topic trend conference organised by Dion Chang – presents a snapshot of the state we're in across several disciplines.

Brazilian online marketing expert for Brainstorm
She's one of the world's hottest creative directors in online advertising, and she's coming to South Africa to speak at Tony Koenderman's Ad Brainstorm conference in October 2007. She's also Brazilian, which gives her a uniquely appropriate perspective from which to speak to a South African audience. She's Fernanda Romano, the executive creative director of Lowe Worldwide New York, who won seven Cyber Lions and the Cyber Lion Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival in 2005.

Parliament's demands impact on media inflation
[Chris Moerdyk] Parliament cannot continue to have its cake and eat it while the bulk of the nation slowly starves in front of their TV sets. Parliament's insistence on the SABC being all things to all citizens of South Africa and its unsustainable local content targets is contributing considerably to inflation.
