Second was Justin Gomes-Luis from Boston House College with Shaggy Cosmos, and third was a tie between Jane Solomon and Jann Cheifitz of Fabric Nation with African Royale and Nosipho Nobulali Mfengwana of Vukanii Bafazi Screen Printing with Jungle Oats, both of the Cape Craft and Design Institute. Decorex JHB hosts the final leg of the 2007 challenge.

    “An Inclusive Society and Human Rights” is the theme of the Disability 2007 Conference, which takes place alongside this year’s Disability Expo, 1 – 3 November 2007, at Gallagher Estate, Gauteng.     Developing infrastructure boosts advertising
    Over the past 18 months there have been dramatic increases in shopping centre development in Soweto, which has generated a marked increase in advertising interest from local businesses and particularly from national advertisers wanting to reach the rising number of affluent consumers in this area. This is according to Caxton’s Newspaper Advertising Bureau (NAB).

    Bullard baits bloggers, launches blog
    Last week, Sunday Times columnist David Bullard caused an uproar in the South African blogosphere with his column, “Name and shame offensive bloggers”. In yesterday’s column, “In the blogosphere everybody’s a scream”, Bullard, who has now become the first Sunday Times columnist to launch his own blog, The Bullog, admits that he was “hoping for a general exchange of moderately insulting banter, but I have to say that the majority of the comments fall way short when it comes to intelligent invective… The final irony is that, thanks to the bloggers, I now have my own blog, which serves me right. I should have kept my mouth shut.” Meanwhile, the bloggers have challenged Bullard (and four other newspaper columnists) to “a public battle of wit and journalistic skill” in aid of literacy and charity on 28 September 2007.

Speaking at last week’s launch of a book on franchising in South Africa, co-authored by himself and Kurt Illetschko, doyenne of the franchise industry in South Africa, Eric Parker, pointed out that franchised businesses play a significant role in the South African retail economy.


    Fruitful flying with Edcon
    Low cost air carrier Mango and retailer Edcon announced a first for South African aviation yesterday, Tuesday, 8 May 2007: the retailer’s more than 4.2 million account holders will, as from yesterday, be able to purchase air travel from Mango’s call centre (08611 MANGO) or from guest services counters at airports using the various retail account cards as issued by Edcon brands.


    Double hat trick at Belgian wine awards
    Spier has scored a double hat trick at Belgium’s Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, winning three gold medals for its premium wines for the third year running. South Africa’s total medal haul included one Great Gold, 21 Gold and 39 Silver medals, out of a 5735 entries from 47 countries.

    Gold again for Nando’s sauces
    Nando’s once again went for gold at the seventh annual Evergreen Chilli Carnival held recently in Tshwane, when six of its sauces took first prize Gold awards in the Retail Industry Best Sauce category, topping its 2006 haul of four golds. A total of 57 sauces were entered into the competition, from sweet and tangy to ferociously hot.


    Clover sets benchmark for dairy quality in SA - Clover
    It’s official – Clover SA produces the best Gouda cheese in the country! This was confirmed at the recent South African Dairy Championships held in Franschhoek where Clover won the most prestigious of all awards – the Dairy Product of the Year – with its Round Gouda.

    Stand-up comedy returns to the Baxter Theatre in June/July 2007 in the form the Vodacom Funny Festival (19 June - 8 July) and spreads its wings into the campuses and townships of Cape Town. The Funny Festival, featuring local and international funnymen, is an initiative by Eddy Cassar, founder of the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival in 1997.

    Franz Marx Films, producers of M-Net’s TV serial, Egoli: Place of Gold, announced towards the end of last week that the soapie’s first-ever KZN Egoli Experience will take place Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 May 2007. Cast and crew members will be stationed at premier property development Le Domaine in Hillcrest during the week, and the public is invited to enjoy the free activities lined up on the estate as part of the celebrations.

    BBC World turns spotlight on SA
    BBC World, the international news and information channel, began broadcasting a series of programmes in a specially commissioned South Africa Direct season, starting Thursday, 10 May 2007 and concluding on Sunday 20 May. As part of the season, BBC World’s signature weekly programmes, Click, extratime, fast:track and HARDtalk, are highlighting topics and issues specific to SA.
