The reality of fashion

South Africans can now enjoy their own home-grown fashion reality show, Surf Fashion Your Future, directed by Donald Clarke, the same man who produced South Africa’s first Survivor series. The show launches today, Monday, 7 May 2007.

Ten aspiring fashion designers, all graduates of design schools and colleges around the country, will compete for prizes totalling R100 000 over 13 weeks of challenges that will see contestants being evicted at regular intervals, until three are left standing.

Ethne Whitley, spokesperson for Surf, the Unilever brand producing the reality show, says the television series promises to be highly entertaining for television audiences and rewarding for all the contestants. “In line with the Surf image, contestants will be working towards creating a white capsule wardrobe that represents the unbeatable whiteness of the brand and targets confident, fashionable women who want to look their best and get ahead in life.

“Although there will ultimately be only one winner, the other nine contestants will enjoy immense exposure and the opportunity to present their skills in each of their specific fields, while viewers will be exposed to a variety of amazing fashion creations during the course of the show.”

Whitley adds, “In addition, making for exciting television, the group is a real mixed bag of characters, many of them with strong personalities and this will no doubt lead to the kind of television drama that viewers will look forward to each week.”

Vying for the Surf Fashion Your Future title are three contestants from Cape Town: 35-year-old Pierre Louis Geldenhuys, 21-year-old Tarryn Ann La Marque and 23-year old Sibusiso Dladla; two Durban-based contestants: 25-year-old Roger Charles Saint and 24-year-old Kate Brunyee; and five Johannesburg-based contestants: 23-year-old John Sithole, 24-year-old Tebogo Lehlabi, 25-year-old Moipone Suzan Kubedi, 21-year-old Thembile Mkhize and 34-year-old Gita Guriah.

Surf Fashion Your Future runs for 13 weeks, finishing with a gala programme on Monday 30 July, 2007. The show will flight on SABC 2 on Mondays, 2.45pm – 3pm and will be repeated on Tuesdays, 11.45am - 12 noon.
