Copyright law after leaving an employer... can I use the work I did in a personal portfolio?

I have been contemplating leaving my current employer in search of greener pastures by going freelance. I want to know if there are any laws against me using the work I did for said company in my personal portfolio and if yes or no, in which scenarios can or can't I?
