Yasuyoshi Chiba was awarded first prize in the "People in the News" category of the World Press Photo 2012 awards for his series of photographs on the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011. Massoud Hossaini was awarded first prize in the "Spot News" category of the 69th Pictures of the Year International (POY) for his image of a young girl screaming amid the victims of an attack in Kabul on 6 December 2011.
Louisa Gouliamaki received a second POY prize in the "General News" category for her photograph of a child evacuated from Benghazi in Libya, and Pedro Pardo received an award for excellence in the "Spot News" category for his photo "violence in Acapulco".
