Providing children with creative education (Gauteng)

Nqobo Tsebe Arts Academy (NTA) was established in 2022 by Julius Tsebe, who wanted to make a positive impact on the community of Alexandra, Gauteng. NTA offers creative art lessons to children in need, nurturing their artistic talents while fostering leadership skills and environmental awareness.

Involvement with SEF

The SEF laid the foundation for NTA’s establishment. Through their programmes, SEF identified the need for community support and empowerment, inspiring Julius Tsebe to take action.

Mission and work

The SEF recognised challenges faced by the Alexandra community, particularly its youth. The NTA was founded with the mission to inspire future leaders and provide an avenue for creative expression. The academy employs a team of 17 dedicated facilitators who teach creative art to over 60 children each week. These lessons nurture artistic skills and incorporate environmental awareness using recycled materials, promoting a sense of responsibility for the planet.

Impact

Community engagement: NTA is contributing to reduced negative social factors like crime and teenage pregnancy in Alexandra. By offering a positive and engaging space for the youth, NTA provides an alternative to detrimental influences.

Artistic development

The children participating in NTA’s programmes have developed their creative skills, achieving a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. In addition to artistic abilities they’ve also learnt soft skills like teamwork, communication and leadership.

Cultural exposure

NTA’s participation in a State Theatre event in Pretoria is a significant milestone. It provided the children with a unique opportunity to showcase their talents on a broader platform, boosting their confidence and fostering a sense of belonging. We hope there will be more of these in the future!

Opportunities through SEF

Through its network and programmes, SEF has provided the NTA with increased visibility and recognition. Access to resources and support has enabled the academy’s growth and expansion. It has also provided collaborative opportunities with other aligned organisations.

Conclusion

Nqobo Tsebe Arts Academy stands as a beacon of hope and transformation in the heart of Alexandra. With SEF’s support, NTA has provided children with the tools to express themselves creatively, develop vital life skills, and become future leaders. With a focus on both artistic enrichment and environmental consciousness, NTA is not only shaping individual lives but also contributing to the holistic development of the community.
