ICASA has received complaints from electronic communications equipment dealers and operators about bogus inspectors posing as ICASA officials in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In some of the reported cases, these bogus inspectors seized cellular phones from dealers and also collected money with the pretence that they were imposing fines on dealers for selling non type-approved cellular phones or cellular phones without ICASA labels.
ICASA would like to put it on record that whenever its officials conduct inspections, such officials will produce inspector cards and where confiscation takes place, a confiscation certificate will be issued. The certificate indicates details of the equipment that is being confiscated.
ICASA would further like to inform the stakeholders that its officials are not allowed to collect cash when doing inspections.
Dealers who suspect foul play should contact Pretoria regional manager Samson Koloi on +27 (0)11 566 3371.
