The former 94.7 Rude Awakening breakfast show host said in an interview yesterday that he had been talking to DA leaders, including MP Ross Purdon, about joining the party as the official opposition prepares to contest the 2019 national elections.

Mansfield said that after meeting DA leaders on New Year's eve he had decided to pursue a political career.

He said he would meet the party's Gauteng leadership in the next few weeks to discuss what role he might play.

"My role is up to the party and where it decides to put me. I am happy with wherever they decide to put me, but I know that I can assist in possibly cleaning up the problems at the SABC and broadcasting. Also, perhaps, in the portfolio of arts and culture. Another passion is animal rights so that could play a part. If the party sees fit, I would love to work on any of those portfolios in parliament," Mansfield said.

DA Gauteng leader John Moodey said the party looked forward to working with Mansfield.

"He has been a long-time supporter and we look forward to meeting him to discuss a role for him ahead of the 2019 national elections. He has much to bring to South Africa and the country will be better with him serving it."

Mansfield announced his political ambitions on social media this week.

The decision surprised many who had assumed that he might emigrate to one of the properties he owns overseas. But Mansfield said he had never intended to "flee".

"I was never running. I was just p*ssed off [at the situation in the country]. I would never emigrate, I have to make a difference," Mansfield said.

Hours after announcing his political ambitions, critics slammed him.

"I have faced criticism and hate for many years. It does not faze me," Mansfield said.
