SABC: Ha Ha... Not!

NEWSWATCH: 'So you work for the SABC? So where's your Matric certificate?' ... SABC staffers have been the butt of jokes around the braai since their former Chair claimed to have a degree or two, reports Mail & Guardian...

  • Mail & Guardian: Staff aren't laughing at SABC jokes... OK, it's not funny anymore...

On Wednesday the disgraced Ellen Tshabalala resigned as SABC chair after being found by the parliamentary communications committee to have lied about her qualifications, and been found guilty of misconduct.

An unfortunate spinoff from the whole debacle has landed on SABC staffers, who have faced some jocular queries as to their own qualifications, but the joke has palled somewhat.

As Mail & Guardian quotes one SABC employee: "It's a bit funny the first time you stand around the braai and people demand to see your Matric certificate. [But] not really the second time, or the third, or the fourth, or the fifth ..."

So, even though Tshabalala has gone, employees will probably still face the same questions - and you can bet they will be even less funny the sixth, seventh or eighth time around. Still, perhaps things will start dying down now, and the best thing about Tshabalala's departure, staffers say, is that they will go into festive season parties less likely to be the butt of all jokes.

Don't count on it, however... Don't forget there's still some Hlaudi weather around a certain Matric, right?

Meanwhile... Off the grid and into the braai fire...

  • Eyewitness News: Mounting problems for Ellen Tshabalala... Lying about your qualifications and perjury are offences, and that means the former SABC board chair now faces possible criminal charges, reports EWN.

Earlier this month the DA laid a criminal charge against Tshabalala for perjury, so she will probably have to face that in court.

And, reports EWN 'all this comes as pressure mounts for her to "pay back the money" earned during her tenure at the public broadcaster.'
