Mix FM's Bish & Fish on the on-air passion mix
Take one Elise Bishop, best known for spending seven days, at 24-hours a day, locked in a tower, from where she broadcast for 12 hours from the breakfast to the afternoon drive. Add a UK-born Steve Bishop, who served time as an international club DJ and has hosted breakfast and drive shows, Top 40 Countdowns and everything in between.
Stir well and you get the 'Bish and Fish' afternoon drive duo, bringing a fresh new outlook to radio as they share their life experiences with listeners.
Fish gives us a little more insights into their show and what it's like living with your co-host...
1. Let's start with those career highlights... Fish: My highlight was the fundraising event I did every year for five years on AlgoaFM, where I was locked in a tower for 7 days and nights each year, raising funds for worthy charities. I am passionate about community service and the ability to utilise the radio platform to do good constantly motivates me to follow that passion. Steve's highlight was landing his first radio job on Capital Radio.
2. Moving on to your 'Bish and Fish' show name - how did it come about? Fish: It was not obvious from the start. The truth is we were just really lucky that are names fitted perfectly to create a really catchy brand name. Steve's surname is Bishop and my surname is Fish. Way back in 1997 when I had already been with AlgoaFM for a few years, Steve was headhunted as the Breakfast Show Host (after Capital Radio closed down) and we were paired up on the show. The chemistry between us was almost instant and the Bish and Fish combo was born.
3. Let's look deeper into that chemistry: What does it take to be the only real-life couple on SA radio today? Fish: In a word, "passion", for each other and for the love of radio. Living and working together can be a challenge and truthfully it is sometimes a tight line to walk for both of us. We both have a zany sense of humour, love broadcasting and making people laugh, which is the basis on which we work. Steve is the wild child of the relationship and I am far more down to earth, a real Yin and Yang combination, which works really well.

The success of keeping our personal lives separate from work is the ability to be able to work in the space where it is just work and then be able to close that off at the end of the day and just be ourselves. We both want the same outcome in our personal and work lives. We both have busy lives outside of radio, so we support each other by taking turns in making sure there is a meal to come home to every night. We are both home bodies so enjoy doing things around the house, spending time with friends and our dogs (we have two border collies named Ringo and Starr) and they keep us grounded. Our personal life experiences translate into our radio talk, which means we are able to share real life issues with our listeners. Bottom line: when you work together, you have to learn to separate the work from the personal relationship and that is what keeps you together, both on and off the air.
4. Lastly then, congrats on the Afternoon Drive show scoop! What can listeners look forward to? Fish: Listeners can look forward to sharing in our personal opinions, which are often different on some topics, which makes for interesting discussion. Our personal taste in music, which is eclectic, to say the least. Fun interactive game shows, music-related quizzes, interesting interviews that appeal to the demographic and loads of laughs that will keep make the drive home in the Jozi traffic more bearable.
