Releasing the petrol price on Friday, the Department of Energy said the price of all grades of petrol would decrease by 73 cents a litre from Wednesday, 1 May. In April a litre of 95 ULP in Gauteng rose by 12 cents costing motorists R13.20 a litre.
Friday's announcement of a drop follows on three consecutive increases in the petrol price.
A litre of Diesel 0.05% Suphur will decrease by 55.56 cents a litre and that of Diesel 0.005% Sulphur will also decrease by 56.56 cents.
Illuminating paraffin wholesale will decrease by 58 cents a litre and Illuminating Paraffin (Single Maximum National Retail price) is to decrease by 77 cents a litre. The Maximum Retail Price for LPGAS will decrease by 81 cents per kilogram.
The department said there was a decrease in the price of Brent crude oil, a decrease in the price of international petroleum products and a recovery of the rand - factors that contributed positively towards a decrease in the price of fuel.
"In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, a Slate Levy will decrease by 6.56 cents a litre from 21.92 cents a litre to 15.36 cents a litre and will be implemented into the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from 1 May 2013."
